FBALobster Pod are winners of the Fife Business Awards 2015

We are the Most Enterprising Start-Up Company in Fife!

In March, 2015 at the Rothes Halls in Glenrothes Lobster Pod won the Most Enterprising Start-Up Company in Fife.  The awards are organised by Fife Chamber.  Initially we had to complete an application form and then we made it to the interview round.  Peter Southcott FDA from EQ Chartered Accountants (specialists in R & D tax credits) and Pamela Stevenson, Lead Officer for Enterprise and Business Development at Fife Council were the judges.  The interview was pretty scary.  First we had to pitch our business with a powerpoint presentation and then we had to answer the judges questions.  It wa

s quite intense and afterwards we could not remember any of the questions never mind our answers.  We thought at this stage that we would not win but decided to buy tickets to attend the awards ceremony as it would be a good night out and chance to meet other Fife businesses and hear the compare Fred MacAuley.

At the awards ceremony we were on the table beside the Queensferry Hotel and Kingdom Housing.  We met lots of new people thanks to Linda McCrabbe (honestly that is her name – we’re not making it up!) from the Fife Chamber who knows everyone and it a fabulous host.  The dinner was good (only smoked salmon on the fish front though – no lobsters), the company was great and Fred was very funny.

When it was time for the awards our category was first up.  We were seated near the back of the room so we thought our chances were slim.  When they called out Lobster Pod we were amazed.  The Most Enterprising Start-up Company Award was sponsored by Business Gateway Fife.  Councillor Jim Leishman MBE, Provost of Fife presented our award.  Many of you may know him from his Dunfermline Athletic connection.  He was lovely and chatted for a while, congratulated us on our award and posed for pictures.  He was a real gent.

As winners of the Fife award we go through to the Scottish regional final although there is no start-up category so we are in the same category as bigger fish than us in the Small Business section.  Our judges Peter and Pamela were the first to congratulate us and complimented us on our innovative product and approach to business.

As well as a nice piece of glassware this award has created a few column inches in the local papers (Dunfermline Press and Fife Courier).  We have become Scottish Enterprise account managed (Scot. Ent. jargon meaning they recognise the potential for growth within the company).  I have attended a great Research and Development tax credits workshop (thanks Peter) and Fife Council through the Fife Economy Partnership have also funded an Entrepreneurial Leadership course taught by Napier University for me (thanks Pamela).  I guess this award highlights your success locally and we have enjoyed our year in the spotlight.  It’s great to highlight the creel fishing sector and shellfish supply chain and manufacturing industries in the UK.
