Tailored Technology for Shellfish Care

This recent bespoke Crab Pod, built for one of our export customers, includes several upgrades that demonstrate how our systems can be customised to achieve precise control and performance.
Enhanced Air and Water Distribution
This Crab Pod includes additional air and water channels built into the base of the unit. These channels distribute water laterally across the system, creating a consistent flow pattern that benefits the shellfish and prevents stagnation.
The air bubbles released through the top of these channels increase oxygen levels throughout the tank, ensuring stable and healthy conditions. The customer requested these extra channels to accommodate langoustines (prawns) housed in tubes allowing boxes to sit neatly on the runners and maximising capacity without compromising water circulation.
Additional Spray Bars for Greater Flexibility
In addition to the main spray bar this Crab Pod features two extra spray bars positioned along the sides. These deliver water flow from above and can be angled to suit different configurations — whether directed over the top or straight down the sides.
This design allows for more uniform water distribution, particularly useful when using multiple stacking boxes or different species setups. The ability to fine-tune water movement makes the system more adaptable and efficient, reducing handling and stress for the shellfish.
Algal Scrubber for Balanced Water Quality
Mounted on the top of the filtration system the algal scrubber offers a natural method of improving water quality. It diverts a portion of the filtered water through a chamber where seaweed grows under a 24/7 LED light.
As the seaweed grows it consumes nitrates and carbon dioxide and releases oxygen helping to stabilise pH levels and reduce the build-up of dissolved nutrients. The result is cleaner, more balanced water that supports shellfish health and can lessen the need for frequent water changes.
