Comparing the benefits of the Lobster Pod and the Crab Pod
At Todd Fish Tech, we’re proud to design and manufacture innovative, high-performing shellfish storage systems that work in the real world. Two of our most popular options are the Lobster Pod stacking system and the Crab Pod tank-based system. Both keep shellfish healthy and ready for market — but they’re built for different needs. Here’s how to decide which is right for you:
The Lobster Pod – Space-Saving & Versatile
The Lobster Pod has stacking customised fish boxes, creating a compact footprint with impressive capacity. It holds the largest capacity of shellfish in the smallest footprint without compromising shellfish welfare. Our largest Lobster Pod holds 300Kg of shellfish in 3.2m². It is highly energy effiicient with one recirculation pump feeding the trays and gravity doing the rest. You can store lobster, crab, and langoustine in separate trays in one system making it ideal for operators who catch and store multiple species. The Lobster Pod has a power-cut protection feature which automatically drains seawater to the sump and self-primes when power returns. The lower water volume means it is easier to change the water with the 20% recommended water change only 3-400 litres per month.
The Lobster Pod is ideal for: Fishermen and small operators with multiple species and limited space.
The Crab Pod – Traditional & High-Visibility
The Crab Pod is a tank-based system offering a more traditional approach with modern efficiency. It can hold up to 750Kg of shellfish but it needs 10m² floor space. Checking your stock is easy as you can simply glance at the shellfish and ensure they are all happy and healthy. The Crab Pod is ideal if you have one customer e.g. the vivier lorry or you are exporting all in one go but it can only hold one species at a time. The large volume of water in the Crab Pod can help reduce the risk of ammonia spikes or salinity hikes but it does mean larger volume water changes. The simple design should be more familiar to those used to conventional tanks.
The Crab Pod is ideal for: Operators with one customer, plenty of space, and a single species to manage.
Choosing Your System
Your decision ultimately depends on your customers, species mix, and available space.
• Multiple customers, mixed species, small footprint: Go Lobster Pod.
• Single customer, single species, larger footprint: Go Crab Pod.
Both systems are built in the UK, engineered for efficiency, reliability, and shellfish welfare.
