A quick guide to maintaining your Protein Skimmer
All Todd Fish Tech shellfish holding systems have a protein skimmer as part of the filtration. The protein skimmer on your Crab Pod or Lobster Pod plays a vital role in keeping your shellfish holding system clean and efficient. It’s designed to remove fine, oily, and protein-rich waste from the water using air bubbles. Although it may seem inactive at times, it quickly gets to work when new shellfish are introduced or when waste builds up in the system.
You’ll notice waste collecting in the top chamber—visible through the window. If large volumes accumulate, you can either drain it using the built-in valve or connect a hose for quicker disposal.
Key Maintenance Tips:
- Quarterly Checks: Change the wooden air diffuser 3–4 times per year to maintain strong air flow and effective waste removal.
- Cleaning: When replacing the diffuser, give the skimmer interior a wipe down with white roll or a new clean cloth (no dirty cloths or chemicals) to remove any built-up oils or slime.
- Watch for Foam: Excess foam might indicate a dead lobster or another issue in the tank—keep an eye out!
Replacing the air diffuser
Replacing the air diffuser is simple: just close the air valve, disconnect the socket carefully (don’t lose the O-ring!), swap the wooden diffuser, and reconnect. You’ll notice improved bubble production right away.
With just a few minutes of care, your protein skimmer will keep your Lobster Pod running cleanly and efficiently—protecting your stock and your investment.
