Research and Development of Energy Efficient Equipment
At Todd Fish Tech, we have spent years refining the energy efficiency of our shellfish holding systems. One of the key areas of focus has been filtration, because traditional systems often restrict water flow and demand large, energy-intensive pumps to keep operating.
Different approach
Our approach is different. Instead of relying on sand, gravel, or fixed-bed filters, we developed a moving bed biofilter. This design allows the filter media to move freely within the system, creating an ideal environment for filter bacteria while avoiding blockages. As a result, water flows smoothly without unnecessary resistance.
Natural Forces
What makes our system stand out is how it uses natural forces like gravity, centripetal and centrifugal movement to reduce pumping requirements. In the Lobster Pod, for example, a single pump lifts water to the top trays, and gravity does the rest. This not only minimises energy use but also reduces additional heat build-up in the system, which can otherwise disrupt shellfish health.

In traditional shellfish RAS tanks with separate filters, multiple pumps are often required, leading to higher running costs and more heat being transferred into the water. By contrast, our designs require smaller, more efficient pumps that cut running costs and lower environmental impact. With less restriction in the system, we can achieve smooth water flow, reliable filtration, and sustainable energy savings without compromising performance.
