Filter Sock Maintenance in Your Lobster Pod System
Keeping your Lobster Pod system clean and healthy is all about regular, simple maintenance—and one key component in that process is looking after the filter socks. These small but essential parts help ensure top water quality and overall system efficiency.
Each Lobster Pod filter chamber contains two types of socks:
- A mesh sock – used to hold activated carbon, which removes impurities and helps maintain stable water chemistry.
- A fine felt sock – designed to trap finer particles such as sediment and sand that the mechanical foam filters may miss.
Over time, both socks require attention. We recommend replacing the activated carbon with every water change and giving the socks a rinse whenever they begin to overflow. Don’t worry if you notice overflow—this won’t harm the system, as the water simply cascades over the top, keeping the pump protected from running dry.
To replace the carbon:
- Remove and dispose of the old carbon.
- Rinse the new carbon under the tap before use—this helps remove excess dust, which although harmless, is better kept out of the system.
- Place the fresh carbon into the mesh sock holder.
- Rinse and return the felt sock to the other holder.
Always remember to keep any cloths or detergents well away from the carbon and filter area during this process to avoid contamination.
If you’ve recently purchased a Lobster Pod from us, your starter kit should include a bag of carbon to get you going.
