How to Change a UV Bulb in an Ultraviolet Steriliser
Ultraviolet sterilisers are a highly effective tool in keeping your shellfish holding system water clean and healthy. While not essential, we strongly recommend using one, as it helps prevent bacterial blooms by zapping harmful microorganisms with UV light as the water passes through.
There is an ultraviolet steriliser on all of our systems, including the Lobster Pod, Crab Pod, Bivalve depuration systems and Oyster Pod.
Like any UV system, the bulb’s efficiency degrades over time. That’s why we advise replacing it annually to maintain peak performance.
Here’s a step-by-step overview of how to change the UV bulb safely and effectively.
Start by switching off both the main pump and the UV steriliser. This ensures the unit is safe to open. On most systems, a locking mechanism needs to be released and the UV head twisted slightly before gently pulling up the steriliser tube—being careful not to lose the O-ring.
Over time, two things reduce UV effectiveness:
- The bulb ages and produces less UV light
- Muck collects on the quartz sleeve, blocking the UV transmission
Remove the quartz sleeve by unscrewing the grub screw and gently withdrawing it using a rocking motion. Clean off any buildup or sulphate deposits thoroughly and let it dry completely before reassembling.
When replacing the bulb, check that it is the correct wattage and pin configuration (e.g., 36W, 4-pin). Handle the bulb with clean hands or a cloth to avoid greasy marks, which can shorten its lifespan. Refit all spacers and components carefully, and screw the sleeve back on without overtightening.
A key safety feature prevents the unit from turning on unless it is fully assembled—the magnetic switch ensures that no UV light escapes during servicing, as UV radiation is extremely harmful to eyesight.
If the quartz sleeve is damaged or you’re awaiting parts, your Lobster Pod system can continue to run by bypassing the UV steriliser using the three-valve setup. Simply close the inlet/outlet valves and open the bypass to keep water circulating.
Once everything is reassembled and checked, switch the system back on. Your steriliser is now ready to continue supporting a clean and safe environment for your shellfish.
