Introducing the Crab Pod: Efficient, Innovative Shellfish Storage
At Todd Fish Tech, we design practical, high-performing systems for shellfish storage. Our Crab Pod is a purpose-built tank with integrated filtration, designed specifically for holding crab, lobster, or langoustine— for happy and healthy shellfish.
Designed for Clean, Oxygenated Water The Crab Pod isn’t just a tank; it’s a self-contained, energy-efficient ecosystem.
Every element is designed to keep your shellfish in the best possible condition, while reducing your workload. Water first flows through a multi-stage filtration system, starting with the protein skimmer, which removes organic waste and foam, much like the sea spume you’d see on a windy beach. Next, sponge filters trap physical particles like grit or sand, followed by a biological filter—a moving bed filter with specialist filter media that supports beneficial bacteria. These bacteria naturally break down harmful ammonia and nitrite into safer nitrate. To further protect your stock, an ultraviolet (UV) steriliser eliminates bacteria and viruses, while filter socks with activated carbon remove odours, discoloration, and contaminants like chlorine when using tap water.
Smart Recirculation and Temperature Control
A highly efficient recirculation pump powers the filtration and another supplies the seawater chiller, ensuring precise temperature regulation. Above the tank, an air pump delivers a steady supply of oxygen throughout the water column, enhanced by a spray bar at the surface and aeration channels at the bottom. These air and water flow channels play a crucial role in keeping the tank fully oxygenated and evenly mixed. Without them, you’d risk stratified water layers—similar to running hot and cold water into a bath and having the cold layer skim across the top. The Crab Pod design ensures oxygen and clean water circulate to every part of the tank.
Built-In Practicality for Real-World Operations
The system includes a safe, covered end drain and side drain channel to protect your shellfish, while also making maintenance easy. These bottom channels double as support racks, ideal for holding trays or tubes—especially useful when storing langoustines in tubes without the need to unpack them.
One of the most appreciated features of the Crab Pod is its simplicity.
A quick glance into the tank at the start or end of the day lets you instantly assess stock health and tank conditions.
Perfect for Shellfish Storage and Bulk Handling
The Crab Pod is ideal if you’re handling a single species and have a dedicated buyer—like a vivier truck picking up full loads. The system makes bulk unloading fast and straightforward. Its large water volume also means that any spikes in waste, such as ammonia after introducing new stock, are naturally diluted—giving you more flexibility before water changes are needed. For businesses with the space and infrastructure to support it, the Crab Pod offers outstanding filtration, oxygenation, and ease of use.
Did you know?
The biological filtration process in tanks like the Crab Pod mimics natural marine ecosystems—where bacteria form the first line of defence against harmful waste products.
When to Consider an Alternative
If you need to store multiple species, have limited space, or require flexible output for several buyers, you may want to explore our Lobster Pod system instead—which is designed for the needs of fishermen, fishmongers or merchants. We’ll cover that in another feature.
