A Devon fishing business shares its experience of Lobster Pods
When a fishing business in Devon first met us at a fishing industry exhibition they were already using lobster tanks they’d designed and built themselves. The tanks worked well but maintaining and cleaning them was taking up valuable time.
After learning more about our Lobster Pod holding systems they decided to invest in a 300kg shellfish capacity Lobster Pod. They were pleased enough with their first system to order another two the following year.
Why did they decide to change their lobster holding system?
Like many fishermen and fish merchants our customer had built their own tanks to hold live lobsters. These had served the business well but keeping them clean and maintaining the water quality required regular attention.
They wanted a system that would make better use of the space available while reducing the time spent on routine maintenance.
The Lobster Pod offered an alternative to their existing tanks with its integrated filtration and individual holding trays making the most of the floor space available.
Was the Lobster Pod easy to install and operate?
The customer described the initial set-up as straightforward. Their Lobster Pod arrived with the equipment needed to get started and an operating manual to guide them through the process.
There were naturally a few questions along the way and both Keith and I were available by phone and email to offer advice and help resolve any problems.
It’s something we’ve always considered an important part of our business. Buying a new shellfish holding system is a significant investment and we want customers to feel comfortable asking questions as they get to know their equipment.
How did the Lobster Pod change their day-to-day work?
One of the biggest differences for this customer was the reduction in time spent cleaning and maintaining their lobster holding equipment.
The individual trays also allowed them to hold more lobsters within the floor space they had available. This was particularly useful for a business where working space was limited.
They also reported that the integrated filtration system helped maintain good water quality and reduced the frequency of seawater changes compared with their previous tanks.
The Lobster Pod incorporates mechanical filtration, a protein skimmer, UV treatment and biological filtration. Each component has a different job to do and together they help manage water quality in a recirculating seawater system.
Why did they order another two Lobster Pods?
Perhaps the nicest part of the customer’s feedback was that after using their first 300kg Lobster Pod they decided to order another two systems the following year.
For us that’s always encouraging. It’s one thing for a customer to be pleased with a new piece of equipment but deciding to invest in more of the same speaks for itself.
Their experience is a good example of how a business can move from traditional homemade lobster tanks to a purpose-built holding system while making better use of its available space.
Lobster holding systems for fishermen and fish merchants
At Todd Fish Tech we’ve been designing and manufacturing live shellfish holding systems since 1998. Our Lobster Pods are designed for commercial fishermen and fish merchants who need a practical way to hold live lobsters in recirculating seawater.
Every business is different and the right system will depend on the quantity of shellfish being held, the available space and how the equipment will be used.
If you’re considering replacing your existing lobster tanks or increasing your holding capacity we’re always happy to discuss the options.
