Who Is Behind Todd Fish Tech?
If you’ve called Todd Fish Tech there’s a good chance we’ve already spoken.
I’m Errin Todd, founder and Sea-E-O of Todd Fish Tech Ltd. Whilst many people know us for manufacturing shellfish holding and purification systems there is a family business behind every Lobster Pod, Crab Pod and Oyster Pod that leaves our workshop.
People often ask how I ended up working in the shellfish industry because my background is not engineering or marine biology. The answer is quite simple. I came to help out for a year and never left.
From Teaching To Shellfish Systems
My husband Keith started our first business in 1998. In 2002 I took a year out from teaching to help with the business. That year somehow became more than two decades.
I studied English Literature and Theatre Studies at university before becoming an English and Drama teacher. I genuinely loved teaching. Helping people learn and grow has always been something I enjoy. What I discovered though was that I also loved working alongside Keith and being part of building a business together.
Being self-employed gave us flexibility as a family and allowed us to balance work and family life in a way that suited us.
The Science And Engineering Behind The Systems
Keith is a marine biologist and a phenomenal engineer.
He designed the shellfish systems we manufacture and still works in the workshop every day helping build and improve them. His knowledge of shellfish health, water quality and system design is at the heart of everything we do.
Customers are sometimes surprised to discover that the people who designed the systems are still directly involved in manufacturing them. We are not a large corporate business. We are hands-on and closely involved in every project.
My Role At Todd Fish Tech
My responsibilities cover customer support, marketing and finance.
The part I enjoy most is helping customers get their systems up and running successfully. The set-up and filter maturation phase can feel daunting if you are new to shellfish holding. I enjoy guiding customers through the process and helping them understand what is happening inside their system.
Water quality, beneficial bacteria, pH and filter maturation can sound complicated at first. One of my favourite parts of the job is taking those technical concepts and explaining them in a way that is easy to understand.
There is nothing better than seeing a customer gain confidence and start achieving great results.
Giving Back To The Community
When our youngest child left for university I found myself with a little more spare time.
I decided to start volunteering with Citizens Advice and now work as a general adviser helping people in my local community. The role is very different from manufacturing shellfish systems but it has reminded me how important it is to listen carefully and help people find practical solutions to challenges.
I find the work incredibly rewarding. I believe being part of your community and helping others where you can is an important part of living a happy and fulfilling life.
Supporting Other Business Owners
Alongside Todd Fish Tech I also mentor local business owners across Fife.
I work one-to-one with business owners helping them tackle challenges, build confidence and grow businesses that support the lives they want to live. After more than twenty years of running businesses I have learned a great deal through both successes and mistakes.
Being able to share those lessons and help someone else flourish is something I find hugely satisfying.
Always Happy To Talk Shellfish
Many of our customers know me well and often contact me directly when they need advice or support.
Whether you are planning your first shellfish system or expanding an existing operation, I am always happy to have a conversation about your project.
At Todd Fish Tech we believe buying a shellfish system should be the start of a relationship rather than the end of a sale.
If you’d like to discuss your plans we’d love to hear from you.
